TCF vs ECF Baby Diapers
baby diaper is being stretched out

In your search for the “safest” and “cleanest” diaper for your baby, you’ve likely heard these two confusing acronyms: TCF and ECF. They both represent very different manufacturing processes. When it comes to your baby’s health and environmental footprint, understanding these labels is the first step toward a chemical-free nursery.

A Quick Glossary

TCF (Total Chlorine Free): No chlorine or chlorine derivatives are used in the manufacturing process.

ECF (Elemental Chlorine Free): Is a bleaching process that commonly uses chlorine dioxide.

Fluff Pulp: The absorbent material found in the core of the diaper.

Chlorine in Diapers

Manufacturers use chlorine to bleach the diaper. This makes the material look white, fluffy and ‘clean.’ However, this aesthetic choice comes with a hidden cost. The chlorine bleaching process leaves behind toxic residues, most notably dioxins. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), dioxins can lead to “reproductive and developmental problems, damage the immune system, interfere with hormones, and cause cancer.”

The Risk of Allergic Reactions

The most common side effect of using a non-TCF diapers is the dreaded diaper rash. For babies with sensitive skin, chronic rashes can be triggered or worsened by continuous exposure to dioxins.

TCF diapers are widely considered the gold standard for babies prone to irritation or health issues. By removing all chlorine derivatives, you eliminate a major chemical trigger for contact dermatitis.

Negative Environmental Impact

The impact of chlorine extends far beyond the changing table. When chlorine is used in manufacturing:

  1. Water Contamination: Toxic by-products enter local water supplies.
  2. Wildlife Impact: These toxins are known to cause sterility and developmental issues in wildlife.
  3. Soil Leaching: Chemicals can leach into the soil, potentially entering the food chain for both animals and humans.

Choosing the right diaper is about more than just convenience. It’s about peace of mind. While ECF is a step in the right direction, TCF ensures your baby’s most sensitive skin remains free from unnecessary chemical residues. We believe transparency is just as important as safety. To back up these claims, MILK™ diapers are rigorously tested and certified by SGS labs. For more information about our material ingredients and test result, please check out our Certifications page.
