Ask an Expert: Paediatrician-Approved Diaper Safety Tips

Parenting books offer a wealth of knowledge, yet the reality of caring for a baby often presents unexpected challenges. For us, navigating the delicate world of infant skincare proved to be one such surprise. To help you feel more prepared, we’ve collaborated with experts to compile essential skincare routines, bringing valuable guidance together in one convenient resource.
MILK™ sat down with consultant paediatrician Dr Ryan Ng from 123 Child Specialist Clinic to discuss diaper safety tips, the importance of transparency and what trustworthy certifications parents can look out for.
Are there toxic chemicals in diapers?
There are many chemicals used in the production of baby products, and some may inevitably be present in the final product, in this case, your baby’s diaper. These includes many common skin irritants and allergens like dyes, fragrances, chlorine, phthalates or unnecessary ingredients like aloe vera, chamomile or lavender extracts to diapers. While some may look seemingly harmless, these ingredients can sometimes cause irritation to baby skin and don’t necessarily improve diaper performance.
What about diapers that claim to be safe and hypoallergenic?
The doctor recommended to keep an eye out for diapers that are validated by third-party certifications that ensure stricter standards for ingredients use.
Can I trust diaper brands that claim to be safe and hypoallergenic?
Making informed choices about diaper safety starts with brands that are transparent as the Dr. Ryan said to ‘look for diaper brands that are transparent about their materials and certifications on their website or reach out to their customer support for safety report.”
What safety certifications and logos are reliable?
I’d recommend parents to look for OEKO TEX Standard 100 seal, a globally recognized certification that guarantees the materials are safe for human. Another reliable label is Dermatest. Dermatest is an independent research institute from Germany that ensures the product fits the clinical dermatology criteria. I invite parents to look for diapers with 5-star seal by Dermatest.
